Can Cold Climate Worsen Your Respiratory Disease?
Are you worried to go out in cold climate? Cold weather troubling your respiratory system?
The cold climate due to air conditioning or exterior environment causes worsening of respiratory diseases especially in those with prior respiratory illness. Respiratory infections due to cold air cause inflammation of airways along with other trigger factors which can destabilize the patient.
Other trigger factors to consider are cigarette smoke, urban pollution, inhalation of pollutants and irritants present in the air and in the working environments.
When air temperature drops quickly without any gradual adaptation, even for changes as low as 2°–3°, there are possible negative consequences on their respiratory system and the patient is at risk of severe exacerbation of the obstructive respiratory disease.
So be Proactive and be Prepared!!
We cannot control the weather however we can reduce the impact on respiratory disease by following the below mentioned recommendations:
If it’s cold outside, wrap a scarf around your mouth to warm the air before it enters your lungs. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.
Monitor air quality forecasts to stay healthy. Air pollution can be very high both in winter and summer and those with asthma and other lung diseases are at higher risk for being impacted by air pollution.
Remember to take your prescribed controller medications( like inhaled steroids and bronchodilators. Stop activity and use your quick-relief medicine as soon as you begin to have symptoms.
